Safety Rules
safety first

  • A fencing mask, jacket, glove and chest protector must always be worn when fencing.

  • Weapons need to be treated with respect and are always pointed down.

  • Masks are on when weapons are raised. Never point a weapon at someone who is not wearing a mask.

  • Stop immediately if something is wrong or if your opponent waves the unarmed hand or gives any sign of wanting to stop.

  • Report injuries to coaches immediately.

  • Stop if you feel pain or discomfort during fencing.

  • Ensure enough space between an unprotected person (e.g. referee) and a person with a word.

  • When fencing, do not drive your opponent into the wall or a hazard.

  • Wear proper shoes for fencing and ensure that shoes are clean when entering the fencing floor.

  • Siblings and visitors are not allowed to run towards the fencing floor when people are fencing.

Behaviour Guidelines
Respect - Discipline - Awareness

  • Respect the coaches and abide by their instructions and rules – they are there for your safety.

  • Always respect your opponent and referee.

  • Violent fencing actions are not permitted. Fencers must control parries and attacks so that the opponent is not injured by whipping or hard stabbing actions of the blade.

  • Salute to the referee and your opponent before and after each bout.

  • Cheering for other fencers is encouraged, but name calling and displays of poor sportsmanship are not acceptable.

  • Food and beverages are not allowed on the fencing floor.

  • Respect and protect the venue: do not damage walls, floor or strips.

  • Do not hit the wall, floor or strip with your point or blade.

  • Do not throw any equipment under any circumstance.

  • Respect club equipment as your own property.
